September has only started, and I’ve already geeked out a fair bit…
Storage upgrade – Found I had a spare NVME 256GB drive kicking around, looked at what I had in my desktop and found the installed drive was only a SATA SSD M2. So…. out went the M2 and in went the NVME… and another Windows install (2nd in 2 weeks).
Xbox One S fix – so about 18 months ago I obtained a free Xbox One S that was “dodgy” as it kept turning off. Figured it’d be overheating… and I was closer to the money than I thought. Stripped it down to redo the HSF paste, and found the motherboard was COVERED in thermal paste. Someone obviously tried fixing it themselves and thought you needed to use the entire tube. So i cleaned it up, and tah-dah! Working Xbox. Until the HDD failed. So yesterday, went through my drives box and found only a single drive usable with the Xbox – its a 1TB HDD, so twice the storage from the original but no speed gain. Installed the drive, installed the Xbox OS, and fully working again – I can finally play some Assassins Creed 😀
Soundtracker mod player – I cant code for shit. Unless you count manipulating AmigaOS commands to do all sorts of stuff. But then Claude.AI came along. And while Im not “coding”, I am getting Claude to build some stuff for me for fun. So latest thing was a web based soundtracker module player. It works well 🙂 Go check it here
Batocera build – OK, technically this has been a few months in the making but finally got round to doing the final bit. Got a boys weekend coming up, and said I’d bring some retro games…… the guys threw a list of wanted games at me. And wow… its hard to track down the right games using MAME’s naming conventions. So I downloaded an entire Romset and threw that onto the mini PC thats being used for Batocera. Then came the long game….. scraping and downloading for ALL the Roms. After about 4 days, I’m finally down to the last 4000 (out of approx 30000).
And the month aint over….
